We didn’t spend a lot of time in Baker City, we spent most of our time around Baker City. The city itself has lots of stuff to do, including a historic downtown, bike trails, and the like, but we only had a short time available and we chose to go on a hike near Philips Lake.
Kind of a cool, overcast morning, but great for hiking if you had enough layers on. We hiked for around two hours and had some great catch-up conversations. It’s a rare trip where I can see both brothers in one trip, but our earlier stop in Iowa and now this stop made this possible.
We went out for lunch at the Inland Cafe, recommended to us by the personal the visitor center. Appears to be a hangout for the locals. Good recommendation, good food.
Then on to the National Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, a few miles east of Baker City. This appeared first of all to be a large visitor center perched on top of the highest hill in the area. I thought it strange that the main center was on top of the hill when the actual Oregon Trail would have been more in the valleys, but it also covered some of the gold mining in the area and had a few restored buildings from that era.
We walked in the ruts of the Oregon Trail for a bit and just imagined riding in (or walking beside) a covered wagon for nearly 2000 miles. I think I prefer my RV. It has running water. And heat. And suspension.
And then we bade goodbye and they went their way and we went ours. Two hours drive time back to Hope House.
In the words of Donna: “Welcome Home.”
