Saturday

Having a free day today, we took off into Giddings, picked up a few supplies, and then drove to Bastrop State Park, about a half hour away.  We didn’t want to go too far afield as our engine still needs some turbo seals.  Hopefully I’ll receive those this coming week.

Bastrop State Park is situated in a rather large stand of loblolly pines, much of which burned in 2011.  So a reforestation is slowly occurring over this whole area.  About 12 miles away another park, Buescher State Park, sits in a similar stand of pines.  A popular connecting road goes between the two parks.  Paved and with a 30 mile-per-hour speed limit, it would be perfect for biking except it is very hilly.  We were told at the entrance gate to drive it first to make sure we could do it.

We biked it.  And it was hilly.  Up and down for all of its 12 miles.  And then 12 miles back. This is where we really appreciated electric-assist bicycles.

This was a good ride in spite of the 55-degree weather and the high winds.

We arrived back at camp just as the sun was setting.  And just in time for dinner.

Only we were not just in time for dinner. Yesterday’s dinner started at 6:15, today’s started at 5:15.  It is now 6pm and we discovered this difference and walked to the dining hall, hoping they were still serving.

We were probably the last ones through the line.  We got our food and then sat down at a table with another SOWER couple who had also assumed 6:15.  At least we were not the only ones.  And we did not have to eat alone.  I suppose we could have sat at a table with some of the 400 kids also being served, but they were also just finishing up when we entered.

We got our dinner and the food was delicious.

Home Again

We’re home.  We made the usual stop in Shipshewana, Indiana at Deb’s favorite grocery store, then came straight home, arriving at about 1pm....
