It seems like every place we have been to we end up at First Baptist Church on Sunday. Today was no exception. The First Baptist Church is three blocks from the camp, so we walked there and joined all the other SOWER couples who had the same idea we did. Super friendly church, we were still talking with a couple of the members as the service started.
This was the first time meeting some of the couples as our paths just have not crossed over the last day or so, even though our RVs are clustered in the small RV lot in the camp. So we traded names and promptly forgot most of them. We’ll get a better chance later on in our kick-off meeting.
We took a bike ride through town in the afternoon, riding through town for a while and ending up at the Fisherman’s Memorial out by all the shrimp boats. Not really sure what the memorial was for; it was just a statue of Jesus with his arms out facing the water. The weather was turning by this time and the wind was really starting to pick up. At 58 degrees, this was enough to cause a chill, even through a few layers, so we headed back to the RV to do some computer work and Bible study.
It is supposed to rain starting tonight and into tomorrow. Hopefully not as much as early Friday, which flooded most of the camp. Things are just starting to dry out.
We had our group meeting at 6:30 in the dining hall. It was here that we could be formally introduced and learn a little bit about each person. As always, backgrounds are varied and it will be interesting working with this group. Sounds like we’ll be replacing a couple air conditioning units. Because the new ones are of a different size, we’ll have to frame and finish around the new ones. They also have a golf cart that is in need of repair. On a campus of this size, it is sorely missed and is a high priority. Tomorrow we start in on it at 8am.
One thing we had to learn soon after we got here was just how to pronounce Palacios. With a population that is about 70% Hispanic, you would think that the pronunciation would conform to some semblance of Spanish. Turns out that's wrong. If you try to pronounce it as it looks, you will probably get some strange looks. This may sound a bit weird at first, but if you pronounce it so that it rhymes with galoshes, you'll be pretty close.
So, not many pictures today. The only other picture I took was that of a steel post holding a gate. The entire post was nearly completely rotted away due to the salt water. Anything metal around here seems to instantly rust and then completely rot away. I thought we had it bad in Michigan with the use of road salt, but this takes it to a whole new level.
