First day of work today. So we had to get up on time and get moving. Devotions at 7:30 in the cafeteria, then Rob, the director, gave us a tour of the place. So we didn’t really get started on actual work until it was almost break time.
First order of business for the guys is to replace four enormous air conditioning units in one of the buildings. These monstrosities needed to be removed from the wall, the holes in the wall get modified to fit the new units, and then two hotel-style air conditioners will be put in its place. Not one but two. It gets so hot and humid here that one unit just doesn’t do it adequately, so two are needed. As it was explained to us, if there was only one and it died, everyone in that building would have to be moved until a new unit could be installed. So the second unit also acts as a backup.
Demolition is the easy part, although it took three guys and a floor jack to wrestle each unit to the ground.
Then we had to figure out how to deal with the holes left behind.
Someone remarked that this looked like a government job at times.
The wiring had to be pulled out from the wall and the holes enlarged to fit the new units. As usual, the walls held surprises inside that had to be worked around.
The women were tasked with re-sealing a bunch of the benches that were scattered around the campus. They were first gathered into the tabernacle building so they could work inside. It was a very windy day, attempting to do this outside would not be pretty.
This is the first project where lunch is provided for us each day that we work. What a treat! Today it was chicken wings, mashed potatoes, beans, and salad. Snacks are provided at break time also.
We made a light supper because of the large lunch that was provided. After eating we went for a walk. With tornado warnings out for adjacent counties and a gale warning for the Gulf, we thought we would sneak a walk in ahead of the weather. But it was not to be. The blackness rolled in quickly, making for some dramatic skies and also for a hasty retreat back to the RV before the rains came.
